Key facts: Boiler Upgrade Scheme, October 2026
The grant you can get depends on the technology you install. These are the grant values for October 2026, as set out in the government’s notice of approved Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant categories and values:
The scheme is well established. There have been over 100,000 applications since May 2022, and over 3,500 in February 2026 alone. On 28 April 2026 the scheme was extended to 2030, and the approved budget for 2026 to 2027 is £400 million.
If your home is heated by oil or LPG, there is a higher grant for a limited time. From 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, an air source or ground source heat pump that replaces an oil or LPG heating system qualifies for £9,000 instead of £7,500.
One exception: self-build properties are not eligible for the higher £9,000 grant. If you are on oil or LPG anywhere in Norfolk, including Beeston, Acle and the villages around Kings Lynn and Attleborough, it is worth getting a survey booked before the 31 March 2027 deadline.
According to the Energy Saving Trust’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme guidance, the grant is open to homeowners and small business owners who currently have a fossil fuel heating system. The main conditions are:
Some properties and systems are not covered:
Changes to the regulations came into force on 28 April 2026, and they make the scheme easier to use. Properties no longer need a valid EPC to apply, which was previously a common hold-up. Heat pumps can now be installed alongside supplementary heating appliances, as long as those appliances do not use fossil fuels. Exhaust air-to-water heat pumps also became eligible for the £7,500 grant.
Looking further ahead, £2,500 grants for heat batteries are expected during 2026/27. MCS’s consumer guide to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a useful place to check for updates.
